“Member-to-Member Liability” and Personal Accident - a Summary
For the avoidance of doubt, BJC HQ have confirmed some details about the insurance cover provided to BJC members. This is only a summary: Please contact the BJC for authoritative information.
Member-to-member Liability
1.The sum of £2 is paid for insurance as part of the BJC membership subscription. Members are not allowed to 'opt out' of the insurance component.
2.The insurance applies to the risks members incur while practising judo, not other risks in their everyday lives.
3.The insurance was upgraded during 2003 so as to be applicable in the UK and worldwide, regardless of the judo association to which the other judoka belongs.
4.'Liability' refers to the liability of a BJC member, in the event that another judoka makes a successful legal claim against them.
(This should not be confused with the liability of St. Albans Judo Club to its "employees", primarily instructors, nor with the Club's liability to the general public. Both these are covered in the Club's own insurance.)
5.The BJC member-to-member liability is currently £2,000,000.
Personal Accident Benefit
1.Death - Maximum £30,000 (under 16 - Maximum £2,000)
2.Permanent total disablement - £50,000
3.Temporary total disablement - £50 per week, if in gainful employment when the accident occurred (under 16 - £5 per week).
4.No payment is made for the first two weeks of any claim, and payment is for up to a total of 52 weeks.
Claims
1.Claims can be made through BJC HQ.
2.Proper use of our Signing-in Book and our Accident Book would provide evidence for the claim, so it is important for members, as well as the Club, that these books are properly completed.
3.Signing in and paying the mat fee should happen before the session.
4.A record should be made of any injury, by the session sensei, in the Accident Book, immediately after the session. Whenever the situation permits, the injured person should counter-sign the entry. A parent or guardian should counter-sign if the injured person is under-16.
Both association provide insurance to individual members of comparable value. Both associations also facilitate a personal liability insurance for instructors, again comparable, but St. Albans JC has negotiated a combined insurance for all its instructors which is much cheaper than either, although it presently provides only £1M maximum payout.

What would the insurance situation be to be unaffiliated, or to be affiliated to the BJA?
